Setting up a server takes some time, and some technical knowledge. Don't try to set up a server unless you have some basic computer and networking abilities. Probably, your best bet can be to look on the Internet for a guide on how to set up a server. A Minecraft server does not need to be a high-end machine, but netbooks and notebooks don't usually make for good server machines. They typically have lower-end hardware and bad I/O performance in comparison to desktop computers.
Hosting and playing on the same machine is also possible, if your computer is powerful enough. Having many players in a wireless network (WLAN and especially WWAN) is not recommended.
Use a wired network instead, such as Ethernet. If you decide you don't want to host, but still want to play online, check out the public server options on a website.
If you still want to manage a server, but not from home, check out the of the Minecraft forum or other websites. Expect to pay monthly for this type of server since finding free hosting is a rarity, but you save the hassle of constantly maintaining a server and ensure it is always online for your players. Running server software on your computer without a clear understanding of what you are doing may make your system vulnerable for attacks from outside. Since you're about to run your own server, you should be aware of the possible dangers. Running by the instructions below should not put you at any risk, but this is a wiki which everybody is allowed to edit, and we don't know about your system configuration, so we cannot guarantee you'll be out of danger. Your router configuration (if you want other people to connect over Internet) Alternatively, if you decide that you don't wish to create your own server, you are welcome to join other servers, many can be found on the. Windows instructions Verify that the latest version of Java is installed The Minecraft server requires the Java Runtime Environment (also called JRE or simply Java). For your security, you should only use the most recent version of Java. To verify that you have the latest version, do one of the following:. Open Windows Control Panel, find Java (it may be inside the Programs category), and click on Update Now. This will perform an automatic version check from your browser. However, the browser does not run Java content and therefore cannot check Java through this browser.
Open a command window and enter the command java -version. If a version number is reported, then check the to see what the most recent version number is. If you don't have Java, or your version is outdated, then download it at.
Starting the Minecraft server Begin by downloading the server software from the Minecraft. If you want older versions, find their links at their respective pages. The server is available as a Java.jar file. Before starting the server, be aware that wherever you run the server from (your desktop, a download folder, etc.), it will create several configuration files in that location. It's better to create a dedicated folder for your server, and run it from inside that folder, as this will make it easier to locate/organize all the files.
Double click the file and the server should start. It will write configuration files in the folder, and quit immediately. The first, and required, configuration you have to do is accepting the EULA. A text file call eula.txt is created in the application folder. Open this file in a text editor and change the line eula=false to eula=true.
It signifies that you have read and understood the end user license agreement that you'll follow when using the software. If you don't do this, the server will shut down immediately when you try to start it. If you get an error such as 'Can't save server.properties' and your screen fills with useless, gibberish text, then run the Minecraft Server as administrator by right-mouse clicking on it and choosing 'Run as administrator'. (You may need the administrator password to do this.) You might want to customize the server configuration, as is explained below. Configuring from the command line Both the Java and the executable version can be run from the Windows command prompt/line with extra parameters to configure, for example, memory usage. As we currently know there is no command prompt for java on the Windows platform that will run these commands correctly.
That however is subject to change. To start the server, change to the Minecraft server folder (find the file path to which your server's jar file is) and open the windows command prompt (in Start, just type cmd and it should have a file name of cmd.exe), then enter the following command: java -jar Replace with the server application file name, for example minecraftserver.1.9.4.jar. If you prefer not to use the server's Graphical User Interface (GUI) to enter administration commands, simply add the option nogui to the end of the command: java -jar minecraftserver.jar nogui Some people have reported that this requires (significantly) less memory and CPU resources.
You can also replace the java command with javaw. Javaw.exe is identical to Java.exe, but there is no associated console window. This may be preferable when using a.bat file. (See the next section.) Note however that Javaw also doesn't show any error messages in the command window if anything is wrong. Using the Xms and Xmx parameters, the initial and maximum memory size for Java can be specified. By default, your server runs with about 100 MB of RAM, which is very little.
Most people will change their server to run with more, for example:. java -Xms512M -Xmx1G. java -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M. java -Xms1G -Xmx2G.
Add in -d64 if your server is on a 64-bit using 64-bit Java. Add -o true to tell the server to run in online mode so only authenticated users can join.
Creating a.bat file to store the commands To start the configured Minecraft server, without having to enter all commands every time, you can create a.bat file in the server folder. You can include the pause command to tell the window to stay open after the /stop command is issued. Useful if you want to read what happened as it shut down.
Here is an example of a bat file: @ECHO OFF java -Xms1024M -Xmx2048M -jar minecraftserver.jar nogui pause Double click the file to start your server. You may get a 'ClassNotFound' and ServerGuiConcole error, just ignore these errors and you should see your 'Server Thread/INFO' dialog start the server. Further configuration Read the sections and further for more information about configuring your server. MacOS instructions Keep in mind that the server won't run correctly on macOS 10.4 and earlier and may crash your machine. Downloading Download the latest server application software from the page. Installing Java macOS already has Java downloaded onto your machine. Java is updated through Java's website If you are running macOS 10.8.
(Mountain Lion) or macOS 10.9. (Mavericks) You need to download Java here, as Mavericks will fail when looking for it. Setting up the Minecraft server Ensure you have followed the download step before proceeding. Create a folder, if you haven't already, and put minecraftserver.jar into it.
For example, create a folder on the Desktop named minecraftserver and drag the jar file into it. Open TextEdit, set the format to plain text (Format Make Plain Text), copy and paste in the following: #!/bin/bash cd '$(dirname '$0')' exec java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar server.jar nogui. Save the file as 'start.command' in the same folder as minecraftserver.jar. This will give the server enough RAM to run. The amount of RAM can be changed by editing the 1G to something else, such as 2G for 2 GB.
Open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/Terminal). Grant execute permissions on file start.command to Owner, Group. To do so, type in chmod a+x, with a space after it; drag and drop the start.command file into the terminal window; and then press enter. (This gives run permission to the start.command script.). Double-click the start.command file to start the server. A new Terminal window will open and, the first time you run the script, several error messages about missing files/directories will appear. Now, replace the 1024 in the above example with the calculated number: java -Xms1536M -Xmx1536M -jar minecraftserver.jar nogui Voila, it should run smoothly now Tip: If you want to spare more memory, you may set the -Xms parameter even lower, say: java -Xms32M -Xmx512M -jar minecraftserver.jar nogui The parameter controls how much memory is reserved on startup. Your server will start with 32 MB RAM and whenever it needs more memory it will allocate some until it reaches the maximum of 512 MB. However, this will result in a little slowdown whenever the allocation is done. FreeBSD instructions This part was tested with FreeBSD 10.0 amd64 and 'jre-7u65-linux-i586.tar.gz' Installing Java Due to performance and crash issue with OpenJDK and Minecraft server, we will install Sun/Oracle JRE made for linux. Then to install the JRE, go to /usr/ports/java/linux-sun-jre17/ and run: make install distclean Note: The previous version of this part, tested on FreeBSD 9.2 amd64, was explained like this: You may have to set JREUPDATEVERSION variable in your Makefile to the actual number (e.g. 45 like in this example) and run 'make install NOCHECKSUM=1'. Try running java -version. You may end up with a message that it cannot find libjli.so. One way to fix it is to add your java paths to the search explicitly. Make a symlink: ln -s /usr/local/linux-sun-jre1.7.0/lib/i386 /compat/linux/usr/lib/java And in /compat/linux/etc/ld.so.conf.d/java.conf add: /usr/lib/java /usr/lib/java/jli Run /compat/linux/sbin/ldconfig. If you wish to host your server for local reasons, it is not required that you do so. Keep in mind that port forwarding might cause security risks.
When port forwarding, it varies on how your router will ask you for the information. If you don't understand on how your router wants you to input the information, try visiting for a tutorial. Once you have managed to locate your router's admin page, and find the Port Forwarding page; hit add new service (may not work) (if you use Belkin, this can be very difficult to perform) or custom service.
When you get a page asking to setup the new rule, it should prompt you on what you want to call it. You may name it as you wish, but for simplicity, name it ' minecraft'. Then, you want to look for 'type'.
For the ports (internal and external), enter 25565. If it asks for anything else other than output IP (or internal IP, server IP), leave it alone and continue. To find your computer's IP address, use the following steps: Windows Press ⊞ Win+ R; this should being up the 'Run' dialog box. Type cmd and hit ↵ Enter. This should open a command window with a black background. From there, type ipconfig and press ↵ Enter. You should be given a list of text.
Scroll up to 'Wireless LAN' (if using wireless) or 'Ethernet' (if using a wired connection), and look at 'IPv4 address'. The IP location on OS X Locate your way to your desktop. A full restore of an iPad, because something did not go quite right in survival mode, is going a little too far. And now my oldest daughter has her own smartphone, her 'Minecraft World' must be ported. Because of this, it became time to look at the iOS / Android file structure.
And to figure out how to backup/restore the Minecraft Worlds separately. With millions of copies of this game sold, I will not be the only one with this problem. And now this is resolved, it's time to share my solution. To make a backup of the Minecraft Worlds on an iOS-device, you must use iTunes. Stop the Minecraft application before creating a backup. Connect your iOS-device, with an USB cable, to the computer. Select the device and open the Apps-viewer.
Scroll down to 'File Sharing' and select 'Minecraft PE'. This will show two, so called, documents: 'games' and 'internal'.
These are non-browsable directories in iTunes. Select the 'games'-folder and press the 'Save to.' Now select your backup destination, and wait until all files are copied to this location. All your Minecraft Worlds are now stored on your computer. After saving the iOS or Andriod worlds, we have the following folders on the computer: Minecraft Backup. World Folder 1. World Folder 2.
Snooper World folders have names like '8XYDAAHLAAA=' and '9a0DAHVARAA=', but folders from older versions might contain the name of the world. Levelname Inside the World folder is a file named 'levelname.txt'. This file contains the name of the world. Changing this file doesn't alter the name inside the game. Opening the 'level.dat' file reveals another levelname entry (hexadecimal): 0050h: B8 56 00 00 00 00 08 09 00 4C 65 76 65 6C 4E 61;,v.LevelNa 0060H: 6D 65 08 00 4D 79 20 57 6F 72 6C 64 03 13 00 4C; me.My World.L I dont't recommend changing the LevelName outside the Game. But this file is usefull for identifying the name of a world. Restoring the minecraft worlds on an iOS device overwrites all existing worlds on the device.
And I recommend to make an additional backup, before restoring World data. Restoring is the opposite of a backup. Use the 'Add file.' Button and select the games folder on the computer. There will be a message that the folder already exists. Select 'Replace' and wait until all files are copied to the device.
There is no need to restore the entire backup. Just remember that the 'Games' folder is the main folder. It's possible to delete or even duplicate worlds inside the Games folder before restoring.
Copy of Minecraft Backup. Backup and restore using an iOS device is the easyest. But has one disadvantage: iTunes copies all your worlds to a single folder with multiple subfolders.
Restoring, from this folder, overwrites all existing worlds on the iOS device. But it's possible to alter or merge backup folders before restoring. On Android it's possible to backup and restore one folder at a time. The 'My Files' app gives direct access to the filesystem. You can keep your backups on the same device (e.g. On the SD-card) or upload them to Google Drive.
And the best of all: Minecraft Worlds are OS independent. It's possible to restore an iOS backup on an Android device (and vice versa).
Finally, to round off, a zipfile with 2 Worlds. And they both contain a Village.

Minecraft PE on Android, Sony Xperia L1, Android version 7.0 - no SD card. There are currently 4 worlds in the game, the fifth (and the most important) has disappeared. Yesterday I connected the phone to my PC and went to 'gamescom.mojang' none of them called 'minecraftWorlds'. So I read somewhere on the net I should change the settings in Minecraft PE to 'External storage' and create a world in that mode and then log out, log in again, change to 'Application' and then the missing world should appear but that didn´t happen.
BUT, when I connected the phone to the PC again I could see the 'minecraftWorlds' folder with one other folder inside called 'TRIAAHW±AAA=', I guess that´s the world I created in 'External storage' mode, right?
